How to Clean Faux Leather 8 Tips You Should Know

Faux leather is a plastic product which is similar in appearance and texture to genuine leather. It can also take the place of genuine leather products. Its broad application makes it into various clothing, bags or handbags, shoes and sofas. However, how can we clean it when it is stained with dirt or grease? What should we pay attention to when doing the cleaning? How to clean the faux leather without any damage to the leather?

Cleaning Guidelines

①No matter what type of faux leather products you have, they all need regular cleaning. Faux leather can be easily stained during the daily use. If the stain is not cleaned timely, it will cause stubborn marks on the surface of faux leather. Thus, remember to clean the faux leather regualrly, even though a mild clean.

② Some protective treatments are also needed for faux leather that can be affected by sunlight, heat, moisture, etc. For example, add a waterproof or heat-resistant cover to protect the surface of faux leather.

Cleaning Notes

① The faux leather should be cleaned by hands. Do not dip it into hot water or even over 40 degrees, for it will do harm to substrate fibrous tissue.

② Pay attention to the choice of leather cleaner. You can buy some special cleaner for faux leather. You can also wipe it with a soft cloth dipped in soapy water and then clean it with warm water. Please keep in mind that does not clean it with gasoline!

③ Hang it up in a cool ventilated place after cleaning it. Do not expose it to the sun directly. Once dried, place it in a cool ventilated place. Do not fold the leather or weigh on it. Avoid the contact of organic solvents.

Cleaning Specific Stains

Grease:

①  You can wipe it with cleanser essence directly to the grease. Brush it with washing powder gently if not brunet fabric like black or red. 

②  Brush it with diluted bleach (1:10 dilution) directly if it is pure in white. 

Soap stains:

Dip it with cleanser essence (6 drops of cleanser essence each a basin of water, stir it well) for 10 minutes and then deal it with conventional treatment.

Soy sauce stains:

Brush it with diluted oxalic acid first. Then deal with conventional treatment.

Mouldy points:

①  Dip it with 40 degrees warm water for 10 minutes and deal it with conventional treatment.

②  If it is pure white, you can expose it to the sun after dipping into the soap suds. Then, deal with conventional treatment.

Ball-writing stains:

Clean it with 95% alcohol if it is colored fabrics.

Paint stains:

①  Brush the stain with alcohol as soon as possible once spotted with paint until it is diluted.

②  Cover it with soap and brush it gently along the lines.

③  Dip it into the water for an hour. Then rinse well with clean water.

Tips: 

Faux leather is made from soft polyvinyl chloride resin while the main component of paint is natural resin or synthetic polymer resin. According to it, you should wipe the faux leather with organic solvent, which can dissolve paint without dissolving PVC, immediately such as the paint thinner for sale in the market. What deserves your attention is that do not overuse the paint thinner in case of damage to the color. For cleaning some stubborn stains on faux leather, it is acceptable to use the cleanser. But remember to try it on a small area on the faux leather first to see if it hurts the materials.
